Telepsychology

What is Telepsychology?

Telepsychology involves delivering psychological services such as therapy, assessment, and consultation using technology such as videoconferencing and/or phone calls. Professional standards are the same as in-person therapy. Please note that our clinical team is not licensed to practice outside of the province of Alberta and therefore clients must be physically located in Alberta at the time of any telepsychology sessions.

Sessions are conducted through OWL Video, which is encrypted, anonymous to OWL and HIPAA, PIPEDA, and GDPR compliant. Family Counselling Centres further protects confidentiality by password-protecting files, using secure, non-public internet connections and changing login information and software passwords multiple times per year. Therapists will use the OWL Portal for communication and clients are encouraged to bookmark or save their OWL portal link for easy access. It is recommended to use a personal email for communications with FCC. Please avoid using work emails, as this can impact your privacy with your employer.

Always use a private space during your session. If privacy cannot be established, your therapist will discuss the next steps. Disconnect or disable devices that could potentially listen in, such as Alexa, Siri, or other smart home assistants. This simple step helps ensure conversations remain secure and confidential.
