Sensorimotor Psychotherapy

What is Sensorimotor Psychotherapy?

Sensorimotor Psychotherapy is an evidence-informed therapeutic approach that combines awareness of the body with emotional and cognitive exploration to support healing from trauma, attachment injuries, and other overwhelming life experiences. It is based on the understanding that our bodies often hold the effects of experiences that cannot always be accessed through conversation alone.

By paying attention to physical sensations, movement, posture, and nervous system responses, clients gain insight into patterns that may contribute to emotional distress or interfere with healthy relationships and daily functioning. Therapy helps individuals develop greater awareness of these patterns and learn new ways of responding that foster regulation, resilience, and a stronger sense of safety.

This approach is particularly beneficial for people experiencing the ongoing effects of trauma, chronic stress, attachment difficulties, or persistent beliefs that developed through early life experiences. Rather than focusing solely on symptoms, Sensorimotor Psychotherapy supports the integration of physical, emotional, and cognitive experiences to promote lasting healing.

Throughout the therapeutic process, clients are encouraged to build upon their existing strengths while working at a pace that feels safe and manageable. By supporting nervous system regulation and creating opportunities for new experiences, Sensorimotor Psychotherapy helps individuals move toward greater well-being, healthier relationships, and more meaningful engagement in everyday life.

What does SP help with?

When insight and conversation alone do not lead to lasting change, Sensorimotor Psychotherapy can provide another pathway to healing by addressing the connection between the mind, body, and nervous system. This approach may be especially helpful for people struggling with the effects of trauma or attachment-related experiences.

Sensorimotor Psychotherapy may support individuals who experience:

• Anxiety, chronic worry, or ongoing feelings of tension

• Difficulty focusing because of fear, intrusive thoughts, or distressing physical sensations

• Strong emotional responses that feel overwhelming or disproportionate to the current situation

• Symptoms related to trauma, including flashbacks, nightmares, feeling frozen, or repeating familiar patterns without understanding why

• Challenges finding enjoyment, hope, or a sense of fulfillment in daily life

• The lasting impact of childhood neglect, inconsistent caregiving, harsh parenting, separation from caregivers, or other relationship wounds

• Deeply held beliefs of inadequacy, failure, or feeling undeserving of success and happiness

• Difficulties sustaining healthy relationships, friendships, family connections, or employment

• Feeling disconnected from oneself, others, or the surrounding world

By increasing awareness of bodily responses and nervous system patterns, Sensorimotor Psychotherapy helps clients develop greater regulation, resilience, and a stronger sense of connection and well-being.
