Family Counselling Centres

Inclusivity

Equity, Diversity, and Inclusivity

At Family Counselling Centres, we are committed to ensuring that our spaces are safe for individuals of all identities. We recognise and honour the importance of gender, sexuality, race, ethnicity, culture, religion, spirituality, and all other identity factors as valued and crucial parts of an individual’s journey, and therefore are essential to consider throughout the therapeutic space. We recognise the systemic nature of discrimination that many face in the form of ableism, sexism, racism, ageism, transphobia, and more. We know this often creates barriers for many when it comes to seeking support, so we are committed to actively challenging systemic barriers to increase access to counselling. Ways that we are actively doing this include: offering a sliding scale, direct billing to many insurance companies, and accepting funding from sources like FSCD and FCSS to increase affordability for therapy; providing sessions in-person and online to meet folks where they are at; hiring diverse therapists that understand life from a rich range of perspectives and experiences; and engaging our team in regular consultation and learning sessions, including those facilitated by individuals with lived experience, to ensure we are expanding our areas of competency to support clients from all walks of life.

As your mental health professionals, we commit to informing ourselves on the communities you identify with, and to holding space to learn from your unique experiences within these parts of your identity. We recognise that parts of a person do not exist in isolation, so we commit to applying an intersectional lens that considers the important ways that different aspects of your identity interact with each other and how this impacts your experience with seeking support and community. We recognise that learning is an ongoing process and that this means we may make mistakes that need to be addressed. We commit ourselves to hearing your feedback and concerns, making amends, seeking further training and consultation, and adapting your therapeutic approach to meet your needs better. We commit to being respectful of all voices and perspectives, identifying and challenging our biases, and actively working to maintain an open and supportive mindset with all our clients. Finally, we commit to being an active advocate in the mental health community to ensure 2SLGBTQIA+, BIPOC, and other diverse voices are amplified and represented within the discourse surrounding mental health in our province.
